Maison established the spatial and experiential framework of the project, defining how cultural principles translate into a contemporary retreat setting.

Context
A resort commissioned to reinterpret the traditions of the Kraton Solo for a contemporary audience, with an initial focus on cultural reference and aesthetic adaptation.
Tension
The project risked reducing a complex system of rituals and traditions into surface-level design gestures, without translating their meaning into a lived experience.
Maison Direction
Maison reframed the project around immersion as a non-negotiable, using traditional preparation rites as a foundation to structure a sequence of experiences. The focus shifted from representation to application, where cultural principles define how guests move, engage and spend time within the resort.
Spatial Moves
The resort is organised as a controlled progression, guiding guests from arrival through a series of environments that mirror stages of preparation and reflection.
Spatial planning, landscape and architecture were aligned to create a sense of separation from the outside world, reinforcing focus and continuity throughout the stay.
Material, planting and programme elements were integrated into this system, ensuring that each layer supports the overall sense of immersion rather than operating independently.
Impact
The project functions as an immersive environment rather than a themed destination, where guests are drawn into a continuous experience that limits external distraction and heightens engagement. Cultural principles are not referenced, but lived, allowing the retreat to operate with clarity and intent in a contemporary context.
